PC-EN-P04I cannot travel to Bangkok. What are my options?
Fingerprints can be taken near you and couriered, and a representative under power of attorney can file and collect in Bangkok on your behalf. For applicants with mobility limitations or tight schedules we arrange fingerprinting at a location you choose and handle the Bangkok legwork, so the only step that needs you physically present is the fingerprint capture.

PC-EN-P05How do I collect the certificate, and can it be posted?
Collection is in person at the Police Clearance Service Centre with identification, or by an authorised representative holding your power of attorney and identity copies. Postal or courier return within Thailand or abroad is arranged after issuance. Because the original carries the seal, courier the document with tracking and never send the only copy by ordinary mail.

PC-EN-P06Can I get more than one original?
Requesting several originals at the time of application is far easier than reapplying later, and it is worth doing when you are filing with more than one authority. Some embassies keep the original permanently. If you only hold one and a second body needs it, you generally start a new application rather than obtaining a duplicate on demand.

PC-EN-O01I am already in Australia. Can I apply from there?
Yes. Have fingerprints taken by an Australian police service or an accredited provider, complete the Thai application form, attach passport and Thai visa copies, and have the set filed in Bangkok by a representative. Allow extra weeks for courier legs in both directions and for the manual handling that overseas files usually receive.

PC-EN-O02Does the Royal Thai Embassy in my country issue the certificate?
No. Embassies and consulates can take fingerprints and certify signatures, but the certificate itself is issued only in Bangkok by Special Branch. Applying through an embassy therefore does not shorten the police check — it simply provides a recognised way to produce the fingerprint card and identity certification abroad.

PC-EN-O03How much longer does an overseas application take?
As a planning figure, add one to three weeks on top of a domestic timeline for international courier legs, and more if the fingerprint card has to be redone. Applicants who scan and have the whole set pre-checked before posting avoid the most expensive delay of all, which is a package returned for a missing signature or page.

PC-EN-L01Does the certificate need legalisation before I use it abroad?
Usually yes. Most destination authorities want the certificate legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and then, depending on the country, endorsed by that country's embassy in Bangkok. Check the destination checklist first, because a few authorities accept the police document on its own.

PC-EN-L02Will an Apostille replace this chain?
For Thai public documents it will, once Thailand's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention enters into force on 28 February 2027. Until that date the existing route applies: Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalisation followed by embassy endorsement where the destination requires it. Plan present-day applications on the current chain, not the future one.

PC-EN-L03What does the Ministry of Foreign Affairs actually verify?
The Legalization Division verifies that the signature and seal on the certificate belong to an official whose specimen is registered with it. It does not re-examine your criminal record or the truth of the content. That is why the document must come from Special Branch: signatures from unregistered offices cannot be matched and the file is refused.

PC-EN-L04Which embassies still require their own endorsement afterwards?
Requirements differ by mission and change without much notice. Several Middle Eastern and some Asian embassies in Bangkok routinely endorse after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs step, while many European and Commonwealth missions do not. Always confirm with the specific mission handling your file before paying for a step that may not be needed.

PC-EN-L05How long does the legalisation stage add?
As an estimate, standard Ministry of Foreign Affairs service takes about three to five working days and an expedited counter option is usually same day or next working day, subject to queue and cut-off times. Embassy endorsement afterwards varies widely, from one day to two weeks, depending entirely on that mission's own schedule.

PC-EN-T01My destination does not use English. What translation is accepted?
Translate the certificate into the official language of the destination and have the translation certified, then legalised together with the original so both travel as one legalised set. Countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Korea and Japan each have their own accepted translator categories, so confirm which one the receiving authority names before commissioning the work.

PC-EN-T02Can I translate the certificate myself?
No. Receiving authorities require a translation produced by an accepted translator and, in the legalisation route, one whose certification can be verified at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A self-made translation, even a perfectly accurate one, breaks the verification chain and will be rejected before the content is ever read.

PC-EN-T03Does the translation need to be legalised as well as the original?
In the standard route, yes — the translator's certification is what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs verifies, so the translation is submitted with the original and the pair is legalised together. Detaching them afterwards weakens the set; keep the staple, seal and any cross-page stamp intact when you present the documents.

PC-EN-U01Australian permanent residence — what does the Department of Home Affairs expect?
A penal clearance certificate from every country where you accumulated twelve months or more in the last ten years since turning sixteen, including Thailand. It must be current at the time of decision, so do not obtain it too early in a slow application. Translations into English are required for non-English certificates; the Thai certificate is already issued in English.

PC-EN-U02Do I need one for a UK visa application?
The UK requires overseas criminal record certificates for certain work routes, notably roles in education, healthcare and therapy, covering countries where you spent twelve months or more in the last ten years. Other routes do not ask for it at all. Read the specific route guidance rather than assuming, because supplying an unrequested certificate does not help the file.

PC-EN-U03Is it used for adoption, marriage or residency in Europe?
Frequently. Civil registries and family courts in several European countries ask for a recent good-conduct certificate from each country of prior residence, legalised and translated into the local language. These files are also the most sensitive to the certificate's age, so confirm the accepted validity window with the registry before you apply.

PC-EN-U04Do employers in Thailand use this document too?
Yes — for work permit files, licensed professions, financial-sector onboarding and some government contracts. The domestic use case usually does not need legalisation, only the original certificate. Employers should still obtain each candidate's written consent, because the applicant, not the company, is the party entitled to request the record.

PC-EN-X01My application was returned. What are the usual reasons?
In practice: unclear or incomplete fingerprint impressions, an unsigned or unstamped fingerprint card, missing entry and exit stamp copies, an unclear statement of purpose, or a mismatch between the name spelling on the form and in the passport. All of these are fixable, but each round trip adds weeks, so a pre-submission check is worth the effort.

PC-EN-X02The result shows a record I do not recognise. What now?
Ask for clarification of the entry and gather the court or prosecutor documents relating to it. Name-and-date-of-birth similarity does cause false matches, and it is resolved with identity evidence rather than argument. If the record is genuinely yours, obtain the disposition or completion-of-sentence documents so your destination authority sees the full picture.
